Off the back of my post on Travelling as a PPO I had a few people saying they never knew they could get a second passport and asked what they needed to do to get one, so heres the low down on what you need to do....

So in a nutshell Yes you can apply for a Second British Passport, but only under specific conditions.

Here's a complete guide on who qualifies, what’s required, and how it works.

Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible if you can show a genuine need, typically for:

  • Frequent travel for work where one passport is often away for visa applications.

  • Visa conflicts (e.g., having an Israeli stamp and needing to travel to countries that restrict entry based on that).

What You Need to Apply

To apply for a second UK passport, you must:

  1. Be aged 16 or over.

  2. Provide a letter from your employer (or yourself if self-employed) on headed paper explaining:

    • Why you need a second passport.

    • How often you travel.

    • Why your current passport isn’t sufficient.

  3. Submit your current passport or a colour copy of every page, especially if the original is away for a visa.

  4. Include two passport photos, one signed by a countersignatory.

  5. Complete a standard passport application form (online or by post), but in Section 8, state clearly that you're applying for a second passport for legitimate travel reasons.

  6. Pay the fee:

    • £88.50 (online)

    • £100.50 (paper)

    • More if applying for a 50-page frequent-traveller passport or using Fast Track services.

Biometric Data, Do They Carry Over?

No. Each British passport is treated as an independent travel document.

What does this mean:

  • The biometric chip in your second passport is different from your first.

  • Your biometric data does not “map over”—it is captured and encoded separately for each passport.

  • Each passport has a unique passport number and chip, and there is no automatic linking of travel history.

What to Know About Border Control

  • Immigration systems do not share travel history between your passports unless manually flagged.

  • However, you should never hide the existence of a second passport. Border agents may ask why you have two.

  • If your travel involves visa-sensitive regions (like Israel and some Arab nations), carry both passports and be prepared to explain.
