Reservist Support Policy

1. Purpose

​

This policy outlines our organisation’s commitment to supporting employees who serve as Reservists in the UK’s Armed Forces. We recognise the value that Reservists bring in terms of leadership, resilience, teamwork, and specialist skills, and we are proud to support their service through practical measures.

​

2. Scope

​

This policy applies to all employees of James Consulting Trainng Ltd who are serving members of the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marines Reserve, Army Reserve, or Royal Auxiliary Air Force.

3. Our Commitment

​

As a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and a Bronze Award holder of the Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS),

 

James Consulting Training Ltd pledges to:

​

  • Support Reservists with flexible working and protected time off for training and mobilisation.

  • Ensure Reservists are not disadvantaged in recruitment, retention, or career progression.

  • Promote internal awareness of the value of Reserve service and foster a forces-friendly environment.

 

4. Paid or Unpaid Leave for Training

​

Reservists are entitled to:

​

  • A minimum of 5 days’ additional leave per year, separate from their annual leave entitlement, to attend annual training or required military exercises.

  • This leave may be:

    • Paid at the discretion of James Consulting Training Ltd, or

    • Unpaid, with potential financial support available through the MOD’s Reservist Employer Notification (REN) scheme.

  • Additional leave requests beyond 5 days will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Employees must provide as much notice as possible and submit official training schedules to their line manager and HR.

 

5. Mobilisation and Deployment

​

In the event a Reservist is mobilised:

​

  • James Consulting Training Ltd will grant unpaid leave of absence for the period of mobilisation.

  • The employee’s job will be held open and they will be reinstated in line with the Reserve Forces (Safeguard of Employment) Act 1985.

  • We will maintain regular communication with mobilised employees and support their reintegration upon return to civilian work.

6. Return to Work

​

Returning Reservists will be offered:

​

  • A re-induction to help them transition back into their role

  • A review with their line manager to assess any support or refresher training needs

  • Ongoing access to our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and mental wellbeing support

 

7. Line Manager Responsibilities

​

Managers should:

​

  • Be aware of this policy and discuss training and deployment plans with Reservist staff

  • Help employees plan leave in a way that balances organisational needs and service commitments

  • Support reintegration post-mobilisation

 

8. Review and Monitoring

​

This policy will be reviewed annually or following significant changes in legislation or MOD guidance.
