Our Armed Forces Champion

1. Purpose

This policy defines the responsibilities and scope of the Armed Forces Champion at James Consulting Training Ltd. The Champion plays a key role in promoting and implementing our commitments under the Armed Forces Covenant and Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS).

2. Role Overview

The Armed Forces Champion acts as the internal point of contact and strategic advocate for all matters related to the Armed Forces community. This includes employees who are:

 

  • Veterans

  • Reservists

  • Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs)

  • Spouses and partners of Service personnel

  • Applicants from the Armed Forces community

 

3. Key Responsibilities

 

The Armed Forces Champion will:

a. Policy Oversight

  • Lead the implementation, communication, and annual review of Armed Forces-related policies

  • Ensure policies remain compliant with Covenant and MOD guidance

b. Staff Support and Advocacy

  • Act as a first point of contact for Armed Forces-related employee queries

  • Signpost Reservists, Veterans, and spouses to internal or external support

  • Liaise with line managers to help employees balance work and military commitments

 

c. Awareness and Culture

  • Promote awareness of Armed Forces dates (e.g. Armed Forces Day, Reserves Day, Remembrance)

  • Encourage internal stories, case studies, and profiles of military-connected staff

  • Deliver Armed Forces briefings during onboarding and staff development sessions

 

d. External Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with:

    • MOD’s Defence Relationship Management (DRM) team

    • Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Associations (RFCAs)

    • Armed Forces charities and veteran employment partners

 

e. Monitoring and Reporting

  • Track recruitment data and staff engagement related to Armed Forces initiatives

  • Prepare internal reports to the Senior Leadership Team on progress, risks, and improvements

  • Assist with award submissions (e.g. ERS Silver or Gold)

 

4. Skills and Experience

 

The ideal Armed Forces Champion will have:

  • Lived or professional experience of the military community (e.g. veteran, reservist, spouse)

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • A passion for inclusion, public service, and community engagement

  • An understanding of Armed Forces Covenant principles

 

5. Authority and Support

  • The Armed Forces Champion will be supported by the HR department and senior leadership.

  • They will have access to time, resources, and communication channels required to fulfil their responsibilities.

6. Time Commitment

This is a voluntary internal appointment. Duties may require 1–2 hours per month, depending on activity (e.g. policy reviews, training, events).

 

7. Review and Succession

The Armed Forces Champion role will be reviewed annually. Succession planning will ensure continuity if the role-holder steps down or changes role.
