How to Respond Professionally to a Job Post on LinkedIn (Without Saying “I’m Interested”)

We’ve all seen it: a recruiter or hiring manager posts a job opportunity on LinkedIn, and within minutes the comments section fills up with dozens even hundreds of replies that simply say “I’m interested”, “Available”, or “DM me.”

While it might feel like a quick way to get noticed, the truth is these generic responses rarely stand out and often signal a lack of initiative. If you’re serious about landing the role, it’s time to approach things differently professionally, strategically, and with purpose.

Here’s how to respond (in my opinion) to a LinkedIn job post in a way that actually gets attention (for the right reasons):

The Five Rules To Stick Too.

✅ 1. Go Beyond the Comment Section: Start With a Connection Request (if appropriate)

Before commenting at all, consider sending the poster (recruiter, hiring manager, or HR rep) a polite and personalised connection request. Something like:

Hi [Name], I saw your recent post about the [Job Title] opening. I’d love to connect and learn more about the role and what you’re looking for in a candidate. Thanks for sharing it with your network!

Keep it short and sincere. Avoid being pushy. The goal is to open a door, not barge through it.

✅ 2. Craft a Comment That Adds Value

If you do want to comment publicly on the post (which can help visibility), make it professional and informative. Instead of “I’m interested”, try something like:

Thanks for sharing this opportunity, [Name]. I have [X years] of experience in [industry/field], particularly in [relevant skill or area]. I’ll be applying directly and would welcome a chance to connect or discuss the role further.

This shows initiative, gives context about your experience, and directs attention to your application, all without begging for a DM.

✅ 3. Follow Up With a Message (If You’re Connected)

If you’re already connected (or once they accept your request), send a short message:

Hi [Name], I came across your post about the [Job Title] role at [Company]. I’ve just submitted my application and wanted to briefly introduce myself. With a background in [your area of expertise] and experience in [relevant work], I’d be keen to contribute to your team. Happy to provide any further information, thank you for considering my interest.

This is respectful, professional, and shows you’ve taken initiative beyond just dropping a comment.

✅ 4. Tailor Your Application Off-Platform

Even if the job isn’t listed on a formal careers page, try to find where to submit a full application (company site, job board, or direct email). Include a LinkedIn mention in your cover letter:

I saw this role posted by [Name] on LinkedIn and was immediately drawn to the opportunity. I’ve included my CV and cover letter for your consideration.

This not only shows you took action, but also links your name to a personal touchpoint on LinkedIn, bridging both platforms professionally.

✅ 5. Engage With Their Content Long-Term

If you don’t get an immediate response, don’t be discouraged. Continue to engage with the recruiter’s or company’s posts, commenting thoughtfully, liking updates, or sharing relevant insights. You’ll stay visible without being annoying or overly persistent.

Over time, building a genuine connection (not just hunting a job) will yield better results.

Five Things To Avoid

🚫 What to Avoid

Here’s a quick list of what not to do:

  • Don’t comment with just: “Interested”, “Check my profile”, or “DM me.”

  • Don’t spam multiple posts with the same message.

  • Don’t ask vague questions like, “Is this still available?” (unless the post is very old).

  • Don’t tag random people asking for a job, make it relevant or skip it.

  • Have a CV and Cover letter ready and tailor them both to the job or position your applying for.

Final Thoughts

Your response to a job post is often your first impression, make it count. With a little extra effort, professionalism, and strategic communication, you’ll rise above the noise and position yourself as a serious, thoughtful candidate.

In today’s competitive job market, standing out isn’t about shouting louder, it’s about showing up smarter.
