Over the duration of the course you will cover four modules:

These modules collectively provide the necessary knowledge to prepare you for the job.

Registering for a personal SIA online account
During your course you will be told about the process for applying for a licence and this starts with you registering for a personal SIA online account, the video below shows you how to do this.
What happens once you pass the course
Once you have passed the course you will need to apply for your SIA licence, to achieve this you will need to submit your application through the SIA online account you set up during the course, your details to be checked, you will need to pay the application fee and submit your proofs of identity to be checked.
Once all these are verified and your CRB check is released to the SIA your licence will be sent to you.
Disclosure and Barring service checks
One part of the application which causes some concerns is the background checking that is carried out through the Disclose and Barring service.
The check will only show convictions that are not ‘spent’, for example some types of caution will disappear after 3 months, it usually takes around 14 days for you to receive your certificate.
If you have any concerns around succsessfully applying for a licence you can also carry out a pre check that will give you a good indication of your eligability for a licence.
Our criminal record indicator will ask you questions about you and your criminal record. It will then use your answers to estimate whether you will pass our criminality checks.
The result shown by this tool is an estimate, not a guarantee. This is because:
we do not check the details you enter - if they are not accurate then the result shown by this tool will be wrong
we take account of the time since your sentence restrictions ended – so the indicator could correctly show that we would refuse your application today, but by the time you apply our decision might be different
we can treat an offence not listed in this tool as relevant if in our view it affects your suitability to hold a licence - you can find out more about this in our Get Licensed booklet
we give special consideration to sexual offences, terrorism offences, and offences against children – this is regardless of how long ago those offences were

If you have sexual or terrorism offences on your record, or offences against children, we may ask you for further information about these offences.
